Taylor will visit five Canadian provinces in September for live recordings of her Massey Lectures. Democracy may not truly exist, but it's still worth fighting for: Astra Taylor. To feel better in this world, we need collective action, says Massey lecturer Astra Taylor Her books include The People's Platform: Taking Back Power and Culture in the Digital Age and Democracy May Not Exist, But We'll Miss it When It's Gone. Taylor was active in the Occupy Movement and has been an outspoken critic of predatory practices around debt. By facing our existential insecurity and embracing our vulnerability, Taylor argues, we can begin to develop more caring, inclusive, and sustainable forms of security to help us better weather the challenges ahead. Mixing social critique, memoir, history, political analysis, and philosophy, her lectures rethink both insecurity and security from the ground up. From home ownership and education to the wellness industry and policing, many of the institutions and systems that promise to make us more secure actually undermine us. This year, Winnipeg-born filmmaker, writer and political organizer Astra Taylor explores how seemingly disparate crises - rising inequality and declining mental health, the ecological emergency, and the threat of authoritarianism - originate from a social order built on insecurity. The CBC Massey Lectures are back this fall, and they may be coming to a city near you.
